For clinicians working close to the X-ray source during interventional procedures, radiation protection has always required a careful balance between effective shielding, access to the patient and the physical burden of personal protective equipment.
MAVIG’s new Image Safely® setup takes a more integrated approach. By combining ceiling-suspended upper-body shielding, table-mounted lower-body protection and patient drapes, the system is designed to create a larger protected working zone around the procedure table while supporting a more comfortable clinical workflow.

What is the MAVIG Image Safely® setup?
Image Safely® is MAVIG’s enhanced radiation protection concept for interventional imaging environments. At the centre of the setup is the new OT58 / OT58001 upper-body shielding system, used together with UT70 lower-body protection and dedicated radiation-protective drapes.
Rather than relying on a single shield or on protective clothing alone, the setup is designed to reduce gaps between individual protective elements and create what MAVIG describes as the “Image Safely Zone”.

Up to 98% reduction in scattered radiation
According to MAVIG, the complete OT58001 shielding setup can reduce scattered radiation at the examiner’s position by up to 98% when the upper-body shields are used in combination with UT70 lower-body protection and the specified patient drapes.
This system-based approach is intended to make the radiation protection apron a secondary layer of protection rather than the primary barrier. MAVIG states that, where the complete setup and local radiation-safety requirements permit, this can support the use of protective clothing with a lower lead equivalent and therefore reduce the weight carried by medical staff.

OT58001: Connect & Protect
A key feature of the new system is MAVIG’s Connect & Protect design. The OT58001 consists of two large transparent lead-acrylic shields that can be joined by a detachable protective connecting curtain.
When connected, the shields create a wider protection area for the operator and assisting staff. When a procedure or room configuration requires more space, the shields can be separated and positioned independently.
Designed for interventional workflow
The Image Safely® concept is designed for procedures using both femoral and radial access. Its flexible panel curtain follows the patient contour to help close the space beneath the upper shield, while dedicated patient drapes extend the protected area around the access site.
MAVIG also designed the setup to integrate with existing room infrastructure. In facilities already using the Portegra®2 ceiling suspension system, the new shielding components can be incorporated without requiring a completely new suspension concept.
Key benefits of Image Safely®
- Enhanced scatter protection: up to 98% reduction at the examiner position with the complete specified setup.
- Potential for lighter PPE: reduced reliance on the apron as the primary protective barrier may allow lower lead-equivalent clothing where clinically and legally appropriate.
- Extended protection zone: two upper shields can be connected to create a larger protected working area.
- Flexible configuration: the shields can also be separated when the procedure requires a different layout.
- Femoral and radial access: protective components are designed to support both common interventional access approaches.
- Existing-room integration: particularly suited to rooms already equipped with MAVIG Portegra®2 infrastructure.
A broader approach to staff radiation protection
Interventional imaging teams need to remain close to the patient, equipment and procedural field, which can make scatter radiation an ongoing occupational consideration. Image Safely® addresses this by treating shielding as a coordinated room setup rather than a collection of individual products.
For Australian hospitals, cath labs, hybrid theatres and interventional radiology departments reviewing radiation protection strategies, the new MAVIG system provides another option for improving shielding coverage while also considering staff ergonomics and workflow.
