Codonics Safe Label System
Safer medication starts with a scan. Connect preparation, administration and waste with SLS 600i and complementary tools that help clinical teams identify medicines, streamline documentation and strengthen accountability at the point of care.
One medication workflow. Four connected tools.
Medication identity needs to remain clear from the original vial to the patient record. Codonics brings electronic identification, pharmacy-controlled labelling and connected documentation into the perioperative workflow, helping teams reduce manual tasks and strengthen medication accountability.
- Prepare with SLS 600i. Scan the vial or ampoule, confirm the medicine and concentration, then print a ready-to-apply label.
- Administer with SLS-WAVE. Scan the prepared syringe label to pass medication data into a compatible anaesthesia information management system or electronic health record.
- Capture waste with SWS. Record controlled substance waste at the point of care to support pharmacy review and reconciliation.
The pharmacy foundation: the Administration Tool lets pharmacy manage the formulary, label content and preparation settings used by SLS.

SLS 600i: identify, confirm and label
A second set of eyes at preparation
Interruptions, fatigue and look-alike packaging can make medication errors harder to spot. SLS adds an electronic identity check: scan the vial or ampoule, see and hear confirmation of the medicine and concentration, then print a clear, ready-to-apply label. This consistent workflow helps reduce vial swaps and mislabelling while keeping medication identity attached to the prepared syringe.
Pharmacy-approved drug names, concentrations, diluents and warnings are managed through the Administration Tool. Labels can carry preparation and expiry details, preparer information and a machine-readable barcode, according to the selected configuration.
Designed for connected medication workflows
- 1D and GS1 DataMatrix scanning: identify medicines and capture available encoded expiry and lot information.
- On-demand labelling: replace handwritten labels with consistent, legible medication information.
- Pharmacy oversight: standardise approved preparations across connected SLS stations.
- Room to grow: the 600i comes pre-wired for a future RFID read/write upgrade.
With compatible anaesthesia cart and AIMS/EHR integrations, a scan can also support inventory and documentation workflows. Integration scope depends on the systems and configuration in use.
SLS-WAVE: scan at administration
Less searching. Less repeated entry.
SLS-WAVE is a mounted point-of-administration scanner designed for use with Safe Label System. Positioned within arm’s reach, it lets the clinician scan the prepared syringe label during the administration workflow and pass medication barcode data into the appropriate fields of a compatible AIMS/EHR.
Carrying the medication identity forward from preparation helps teams reduce manual re-entry and supports an additional safety check before administration. The clinician still enters or confirms the dose within the configured clinical workflow.
- Preserve medication identity: connect the prepared SLS label with the medication record.
- Support timely documentation: capture medication data and time stamps within supported workflows.
- Strengthen traceability: give pharmacy and clinical teams more complete records for review and reconciliation.
Visual medication information, allergy alerts, audible confirmation, blood-product documentation and interoperable pump workflows depend on the AIMS/EHR, scanner generation and integration configuration.

Safe Waste System: accountability at the point of care
Safe Waste System (SWS) is designed to capture controlled substance waste and the data needed for reconciliation before the clinician leaves the room. Used alongside SLS 550i or newer models, it brings waste handling into the medication workflow using a shared screen and scanner.
A clearer record for pharmacy
- Identify: associate the medicine with the waste event.
- Measure and assay: capture waste volume and use spectroscopy to check drug identity and concentration.
- Contain: render the substance non-retrievable within a secure disposable receptacle.
- Record and report: capture who, what, when and how much to support pharmacy review and reconciliation.
More complete records can help teams investigate discrepancies and strengthen diversion-control processes, with less reliance on reconstructing events after a case.
Confirm Australian availability, integration scope and how the proposed configuration supports your organisation’s controlled-medicine, witnessing and reconciliation policies with Imaging Solutions.
Administration Tool: pharmacy control across SLS
Standardise the preparation, not just the label
The SLS Administration Tool gives pharmacy a central way to create, customise and control the drug formulary used by Safe Label Systems. Hospital-approved medication records and preparation settings help clinicians work from a consistent foundation.
- Manage the formulary: select medicines from a master drug database and configure approved concentrations, diluents and dilution options.
- Control label content: choose templates and configure drug warnings, spoken drug names and expiry settings.
- Protect changes: use user logins, revision control and formulary locking to support controlled editing.
- Review before release: use development, test/review and approval stages before a formulary is released for clinical use.
- Support governance: generate reports for documentation, review and pharmacy oversight.
Configuration options also cover safety checks, barcode content and custom labels. Work with pharmacy, clinical governance and IT to confirm current software requirements and a deployment process suited to your organisation.

Value across the medication journey
- More time for patient care. Supported integrations reduce repeated searching, transcription and manual entry, helping clinicians keep documentation within the workflow.
- Clearer medication records. Carrying medication identity into the patient record supports traceability, billing and pharmacy reconciliation.
- Stronger stock and waste accountability. Compatible cart, administration and waste workflows give pharmacy better information to review discrepancies and support diversion-control processes.
- An investment that can grow. Evaluate EHR, cart and infusion-pump integrations alongside SWS and the 600i’s future RFID upgrade pathway as your service develops.
Imaging Solutions can help scope the combination of products and integrations that fits your clinical environment. Financial and operational outcomes depend on the local workflow and implementation.
Consistent with Australian Standards
Configure SLS labelling to support practices consistent with the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) National Standard for User-applied Labelling of Injectable Medicines, Fluids and Lines, alongside local medication policies.
The Commission’s standard addresses what should be labelled, required label information, format and placement across different clinical settings. Local implementation should include appropriate templates, pharmacy governance, staff education and medication-checking procedures.
Discuss the proposed label configuration and intended clinical use with your pharmacy and clinical governance teams. Product selection and configuration form part of implementing safe labelling practices.
Questions about your SLS configuration?
These answers provide a starting point for pharmacy, anaesthesia, clinical governance and IT teams planning a demonstration or implementation.
SLS adds electronic identification and labelling checks to the workflow. Continue your organisation’s medication checks, dose confirmation, patient and route identification, and any required witnessing procedures. Pharmacy and clinical governance teams should approve the local configuration and supporting processes.
SLS and SLS-WAVE are designed for supported anaesthesia cart and AIMS/EHR integrations, including configured Epic, Cerner and other platforms. The data captured and the available clinical alerts depend on the label configuration, interfaces and software versions. Confirm your specific cart, AIMS/EHR and network environment during scoping.
The 600i is pre-wired for a future RFID read/write upgrade. This is an upgrade pathway rather than a statement that RFID read/write is active in every supplied configuration. Ask Imaging Solutions about the current roadmap, compatibility and availability.
